Someone told me that this book broke her heart so much, she literally warned everyone she knew from reading it. As you might already suspect, that was exactly why I picked it up and started reading. What I can tell you now is: A Little Life is NOT a happy book. Not only did it break my heart, but it completely destroyed what little faith in humanity I had left. This book opened up old wounds. For more than 800 hundred pages it reminded me there is nothing fair about life. I cried for Jude (main character) and for all the Judes living in this world who are abandoned, neglected, separated, abused and ostracized due to no fault of their own.
But this book is also about love, friendship and acceptance. I was jealous for the wonderful relationships the main characters shared throughout their lives. I envied the unconditional love and unwavering devotion poured over Jude, despite of his own sense of brokenness. I have no doubt that A Little Life will change you, and the way you see some people. The book makes you realize that our lives are fluid-- a sum total of our choices—and not dictated by any one thing. I hope you read A Little Life and experience for yourself Jude’s agonizing, haunting plea for redemption. His life is beautiful, painful and sometimes both at the same time.
