Picture Bride is the gripping 500-page saga following Haru, a young peasant girl in turn-of-the-century Japan, from the shrines of Kyushu to the sugar plantation of Territorial Hawai’i. Forced to flee one grim fate into another, and the young picture bride finds herself with a husband who doesn’t want her in a strange new world surrounded by distrust of Japanese immigrants. But, Haru soon emerges as a strong-minded community leader, a teacher, and an insightful go-between who recognizes the looming threats to her family and friends. Absorbing and meticulously researched, Mr. Malaghan’s sweeping epic is in fact the story of Hawai’i Japanese immigrants, who survived – and thrived – against great odds.

After visiting our Portland and Seattle store, Michael Malaghan stopped by our San Francisco store for his Kinokuniya West Coast tour to promote his latest, Picture Bride. His 30 minute presentation included his inspiration and the history behind his story. He also shared photos with his wife from Japan and Hawaii, where the book takes place.
