This is a reprint of the 1973 edition published by Academic Press, New York; the text was also reprinted in 1985 and 2001. Mendelson (City U. of New York-Queens College) created a textbook for a one-semester undergraduate or early graduate course, hoping that it would also be accessible and enjoyable for general readers with no background or experience in abstract mathematical thinking. He introduces the basic number systems of mathematics: natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, real numbers, and complex numbers. The most important are the real numbers, he says, so he economizes on the material before that to make sure instructors get to them. Annotation 2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
