The authors, who are a property developer, sustainability specialist, architect, and architecture critic, provide projects from the Yale graduate advanced architecture studio, as part of the Edward P. Bass Distinguished Visiting Architecture Fellowship, which is meant to bring together property developers to lead advanced studios in collaboration with design faculty. The studio analyzed the current ecological conditions, indigenous architecture styles, and resort culture of Gili Meno, a remote island off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia, to generate next-generation models of tourism, and participants created projects focusing on local and ethical resources, recycling, and environmental responsibility. The book begins with an interview between architect Henry Squire on the design and evolution of Squire and Partners' projects, then follows with a section analyzing the students' research into commercial and environmental precedents. It also describes the studio brief and its ecological, architectural, and programmatic parameters, followed by presentations of individual student projects emphasizing new models of tourism, ecological architecture, and health resorts focused on restoring the mental and physical health of guests, ending with discussion of the incorporation of ecological design elements into resorts, including the corporate response to the COVID-19 crisis.
