Noting that "in spite of draconian conservative stances against bilingual education, educators and classroom teachers are still faced with providing for the needs of bilingual/bicultural children on a daily basis," Soto (Teachers College, Columbia U.) presents 16 articles that collectively recognize Freire's observation that the dominant capitalist classes are unlikely to provide an education encouraging subordinate classes to think critically about their oppression. The authors present analyses of the current state of American education and offer strategies for teachers to resist the agenda of the powerful and help bilingual students gain an empowering education. Among the topics addressed are a comparison of the Nazi era's German-only ideology with today's English-only movement in the United States; various reflections on the authors' own experiences with biculturalism and education; and a description of three programs encouraging collaborative power relations in which teachers resist "reforms" imposed from above.
