Starting as many postmodern analyses do with a quote from Derrida, Mazzei (education, social research, Manchester Metropolitan U., UK) deconstructs the meaning of silences encountered in discourse-based research. E.g., in her study of white teachers in an urban setting, their whiteness was present by its absence in that context. Drawing on insights by philosophers and poets (one spoke of silences as "inhabited"), she shifts the gaze from Other to Self to study "interior monologues" and presents "undisciplined" questions to explore this meta-methodological issue.
