Drawing on fieldwork from 2012 and secondary sources, this study analyzes the production, marketing, consumption, and implications of charcoal production in Ethiopia, focusing on production in Gewane in Afar, Bilate in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State, and Langano in Oromiya, as well as Addis Ababa and the major regional cities and towns as major charcoal consumption centers. It discusses fuel-wood production in the world, Africa, and Ethiopia; firewood and charcoal production, consumption, and scarcity in Ethiopia; the production, marketing, and consumption of charcoal and the charcoal-making process, focusing on the chemistry and quality of charcoal, its sources, the producers' profiles, the market chain, and consumption patterns; impacts on the environment and human health; and recommendations.
